Albania, which according to recent census has about 3.4 million inhabitants, has about one million migrants in other countries, which means that over the past seventeen years one-third of the population has left the country.
According to statistics there are 481 660 Albanian citizens living legally in Greece. If the number of illegal immigrants is added to them it could be presumed that the number of Albanians in Greece is over 600 thousand.
282 650 Albanians are living legally in Italy and the rest of migrants are mainly in Western countries, the United States and Canada.
Albanian emigrants remit annually one billion euros to their motherland, according to Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Kosta Barka, who believes, however, that some measures have to be taken to make migrants return to Albania.
