After roughly two months the world will be Olympics, but before that all eyes will be directed to the third biggest sports event in sports scale, according to some - the European football championship, whose hosts this year are Austria and Switzerland.
Championship begins today and will last until 29th this month in the stadiums of Austria and Switzerland. It enjoys great success and all the 1.05 million tickets for the matches in the eight stadiums in the two countries have already been sold out.
Event of a similar scale, however, is linked not only to pure sports emotions, delivered to millions of fans of the most popular game, but also to generation of huge business.
Having known tourist destinations, the hosts are well prepared to face crowds of football fans and can rely on existing infrastructure. Austria expects additional 1.1 million nights during the Championship while the country of chocolate relies on more than 500 000 nights over the record 36.4 million registered last year.
Championship will create about 7 500 new jobs in Switzerland, although most of them will be temporary. Hundreds of thousands of football fans will spend millions of Swiss francs for beer, bratwursts and nights during the Euro 2008.
The positive effect of the Championship, however, will most likely prove to be a drop in the ocean for the economy of Switzerland. Championship could create additional gross value added of up to 813 million dollars, which is less than 0.2% of EUR 420 billion dollar GDP of the Alpine country, shows a survey of the government of the country. Football World Cup caused little effect on the economy of Germany two years ago, although the country held four times more games than Switzerland would accept.
Some sectors of the economy, however, may receive additional incentive. Retailers, especially in cities where the matches will be held as Basel, Bern, Geneva and Zurich, hope to profit from sales of all sorts of items - from toothbrushes to the flat alcohol bottles and bags with the colors of the teams.
The representatives of the most ancient profession will also benefit from the football forum. Prostitution is legal in both countries hosting the Championship but priestesses of love must be registered by local and city health authorities.
England will miss the Championship. Economists warn that the British economy could also miss revenue of 2 billion pounds because the three lions of the Championship will not participate, while television company ITV, which holds the rights to the championship for the Island, together with the BBC, may omitted 10 million pounds of revenue from advertising. The company even refused to broadcast the final match of the Championship alive and will be satisfied only with a report after the event.
British pawnshops, however, are rather excited by the failure of England to rank for the forum, as most English tend to stake on their national team and its possible success to cause catastrophic loss of bookmakers.
In other countries loan - offices also anticipate the championship. Germany is considered to have the greatest chances to win Euro 2008, a stake of 1 euro most often will bring you between 4 and 5 euros in the larger pawnshops, if the Bundesteam wins the championship of the old continent. Spain, Italy, France and Portugal follow with the greatest chance of winning the championship. The coefficients for the current champion Greece are very high, indicating that few people expect our south neighbor to repeat its achievement from four years ago. Austria is defined as the absolute outsider of the championship.
Unfortunately, Bulgaria fails serial great football forum, but this does not make the Championship less interesting. Traumas of key players from teams which are favorites days before the start of the Championship also do not reduce the interest.
