German football chief calls for end to Ballack-Bierhoff row

German football chief calls for end to Ballack-Bierhoff row German Football Federation (DFB) president Theo Zwanziger Monday called for end to a dispute between captain Michael Ballack and team manager Oliver Bierhoff.

The dispute has been simmering since the Euro 2008 final in Vienna at the end of June after an altercation on the pitch following the 1-0 defeat to Spain.

Zwanziger told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa the focus should now be on Wednesday's World Cup qualification match against Finland in Helsinki.

"The coach must be able to concentrate fully on preparing the team for Wednesday's difficult task," he said.

It was up to Ballack and Bierhoff to "come together themselves," he said.

"There are always differences of opinion, even among ourselves in the presidium. But things like this have to be dealt with internally and not kept running in the media." he added.

German media reports Monday spoke of continuing friction between the two.

Bierhoff said in a newspaper interview last week that Germany had won games with and without Ballack, who is currently injured.

Ballack responded with a similar remark in an interview Sunday with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Coach Joachim Loew held a meeting with Ballack last week over their differences, and the captain and team manager also met for clear-the-air talks.

The Germans defeated Liechtenstein 6-0 in Vaduz on Saturday in their first World Cup qualifier and were due to leave their nearby St Gallen base for Helsinki later Monday.
