Lockheed Martin to Build Aerospace Centre in Bulgaria

American arms giant Lockheed Martin, manufacturer of the most widely spread jet - fighter worldwide F-16 Fighting Falcon, is interested in establishing aerospace center in Varna, announced the Director of the Nicolaus Copernicus Observatory and Planetarium Ivan Ivanov.

The idea is of Alexander Alexandrov and has been discussed with the President of Bulgarian astronautic association in Varna Eng. Dimiter Filipov. An interest of creating such a complex in Varna and Sofia was expressed by one of the vice presidents of the company during a meeting with the Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, Ivanov noted.

In his words the aero-space center will be similar to that in the Turkish city of Izmir. It will have educational nature and will not be a test center for astronauts and pilots.

There are many such complexes in the U.S., added Ivan Ivanov and specified that they are equipped with air simulators, trainers for artificial gravity, laboratories, in which are made attempts in the field of space biology, places for a longer stay and others.

We have not talked about this topic yet with the mayor Kiril Yordanov and the chairman of the Municipal Council Borislav Gutsanov but there are places for the construction of such a facility, added the director of NCOP "Nicolaus Copernicus".

As a suitable place he pointed out the terrain for the National maritime museum in the area Pochivka. Asked about the cost of the aerospace center, Ivanov replied that probably it would not be cheaper than a few millions.
