A quake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale shook Mexico at 2:41 pm (1941 GMT) Thursday, the country's National Seismological Service (SSN) said.
Preliminary information showed the quake's epicentre was off the coast of the state of Chiapas.
Civil protection authorities said the quake was barely felt in Mexico City, and though it was felt in the southern states of Chiapas and Oaxaca there were no immediate reports of damages.
