Sea transport in Greece's gone up by 179 percent since 2004

Justifying themselves with increased international oil prices, companies for marine passenger transport in Greece have increased ticket prices by up to 179 percent since 2004 today.

On one hand, increases burden significantly costs for summer vacations of Greeks; on the other hand, they burden significantly transportation bills of residents of insular Greece.

Detailed data on the topic were published by Eleftherotypia Journal which noted that the increases are attributable to the four year period which went after the release of prices of maritime transport of today's government.

According to the publication the cost of traveling by ship for one to four members family with a car has increased by 11 percent since 2007. So, a journey of two parents and two children with their personal car to the island of Sifnos with a fast ship costs 427 euro this summer, and the price to Mitilini destination using a cabin in an ordinary vessel is 688 euros.

The cheapest return ticket to Santorini by Blue Star Ferries Company costs this year 58 euros or 36 percent more expensive than five years back. For Island of Kos the price is 91 euros from 56.70 euros, that is an increase with 60.5 percent.

In the days of great demand return tickets "disappear". In some cases traveling with older ships worth more due to the fact that tickets for new and faster vessels are quickly sold out and passengers are forced to turn to older ships as the only option.

The journal also notes that places in the cheapest cabins have already begun to finish for the remote of many hours from Piraeus Islands.
