Slight drop in EU inflation confirmed

Inflation fell slightly in August to 4.2 per cent in the 27-member European Union and to 3.8 per cent in the 15-member euro area, it was confirmed Tuesday.

Definite figures by the European statistical office Eurostat also confirmed 0.1 per cent monthly drops from July in both the EU and the eurozone.

The breakdown of the monthly rates also confirmed that food and oil prices had dropped after after a long period of growth.

The lowest annual rate in August was observed in the Netherlands (3 per cent), and the highest in Latvia (15.6 per cent).

Last week, the EU's monetary and economic affairs commissioner, Joaquin Almunia, suggested that inflation may have reached a turning point over the summer, with interim forecasts predicting an annual average inflation rate for 2008 of 3.8 per cent in the EU and 3.6 per cent in the eurozone.
