A half an hour drive from Skopje and a man falls in a much different world - Tetovo.
Still with the entry in the central boulevard we are met by a long line of flags. On the pillar of street lighting are neatly hung the Macedonian flag and this of the EU, and on the top two Albanian flags. It is very strange but in Tetovo one can come across people who do not speak Macedonian.
The astonishment was unlikely, however, when this was confirmed by a 20 years old girl - here's how. We stopped her on the street to direct us how to get to the University Of Southeastern Europe. We asked the slim, dressed in sports wear girl in Bulgarian. She looks puzzled and in seconds she could only say "No razumem" with a strong Albanian accent. Finally, we could understand each other in English is still and the girl offered us to get in our car and show us the university. We separate with a smile. In the city almost everything - 99% is in Albanian language - and the speech of people in the streets, and inscriptions of offices, shops, market labels with the price of cabbage and cucumbers are written in Albanian. Billboards of the election campaign are 99% of the two main Albanian parties - Democratic Union for Integration Ali Ahmeti and the Democratic Party of Albanians of Menduh Tachi. Of course all the political messages are in Albanian language. Although the heat nears 40 degrees, and many of the younger and older women wear head-cloths and are dressed in typical top-dresses long to toe, with long sleeves, buttoned to-the neck. In the SEE University we were met by agile young life - young, fresh, smiling faces. Most of the girls were dressed in sports style. However, along with them, there were girls wearing head-cloths and with covered shoulders. It is only 40 km. away from Skopje.
