Greek police have launched an investigation into an incident in which three officers allegedly forced a migrant to strip during a search in Athens, reports said Monday.
The officers supposedly wanted to determine whether the man was carrying weapons or drugs. Photographs of the incident in the city's central Omonia square were published by the Athens-based Ethos newspaper.
"This is an extreme case," Police spokesman Petros Constantinou said in a radio interview Monday, adding that those responsible would be held accountable.
The area around Omonia square, a centre for trade in illicit drugs, has been at the centre of clashes between migrants. Ultra- conservative officials have accused the government of failing to act against "the lawlessness."
