Spanish giants Valencia announced on Monday morning the passing away of former club captain and coach Manolo Mestre.
Mestre, 73, died on Sunday after an unspecified illness.
Mestre, born close to Valencia in Oliva, was a rugged but thoughtful central defender or left-back - and a dedicated one-club man.
He played a total of 424 games for "Los Ches" between 1954 and 1969, helping them to win the Fairs Cup in 1962 and 1963, and the King's Cup in 1967. Mestre won two caps for Spain.
On four occasions between 1976 and 1983 Mestre was brought in as caretaker coach by his home club Valencia.
