The ruling party of the Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski VMRO-DPMNE won an absolute majority at the pro - term parliamentary elections in Macedonia.
According to unofficial results announced by the headquarters of VMRO-DPMNE, the party of Prime Minister Gruevski received 64 deputy mandates. Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) won 28 mandates. Democratic Union for Integration Ali Ahmeti is third with 15 mandates, Democratic Party of Albanians Menduh Tachi ranked fourth with 12 seats. One seat from the total 120 in the Parliament would have the party of the local Muslims.
The data are based on 70% processed voter records. Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski announced last night his victory at the pro - term parliamentary elections. "At most places voting was fair and democratic, but unfortunately, at some parts there were some irregularities", said Gruevski. "I will do everything that depends on me, to have re - election so that each member is elected fairly", he added.
According to Gruevski he will have more than 60 seats in the 120 - member Parliament. The first task of the Prime Minister will be reducing the tension among feuding Albanian political parties and restoring the damaged image of the country, which is trying to persuade the European Union in its maturity and democracy to begin negotiations for membership.
Until late at night in Skopje supporters of VMRO-DPMNE were celebrating the victory in the parliamentary elections.
Let us recall that the electoral day passed with serious incidents in which one person died and nine other were injured. The incidents occurred predominantly in urban municipalities with ethnic Albanians. The most serious of them happened in Arachinovo village near Skopje.
In this regard, the Representative of the European Union on Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana called for the conducting repeat elections in the regions of Macedonia, where violence had been recorded.
Yesterday in Macedonia the first early parliamentary elections in the country took after the declaration of independence of the Republic in September 1991. 1 779 116 people had voting rights who voted in 2 976 polling stations. They were choosing between 1 540 candidates for the 120 seats parliament.
The country is divided into 6 constituencies. Each of them elects 20 deputies. The elections were monitored by 13 000 policemen, 6 200 observers, including 464 from the international community.
