Centre Party drops to third place after Finnish local elections

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen's Centre Party dropped to third place after local elections held Sunday, final tallies showed Monday.

Vanhanen noted that his party had probably suffered from being in office and said election results differed.

The Centre Party dropped 2.7 percentage points compared to the 2004 local elections, scoring 20.1 per cent.

Four detained over attempted arson on Turkish embassy

Four young men were detained early Tuesday on suspicion of an attempted arson attack on the Turkish embassy in Helsinki, police said.

Police said the four were being questioned about the alleged attack but declined further comment when contacted by Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Finnish-based Nokia, the world's biggest mobile phone maker, said Thursday its operating profit dropped 21 per cent for third quarter 2008.

Operating profit for the quarter was 1.46 billion euros (1.98 billion dollars), compared to 1.86 billion euros for the corresponding business period 2007.

Net sales dropped 5 per cent in the quarter to 12.2 billion euros.
